Time to get on PrEP
PrEP + You = An HIV Free Nashville
What is PrEP?
PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is a once-a-day pill that reduces your risk of contracting HIV by 99%. Currently, there are two PrEP medications —Truvada (the original PrEP) and Descovy (the most recent medical innovation in HIV prevention).
Who needs PrEP?
PrEP is for everyone, regardless of age, gender, sexual orientation or relationship status. If you are at risk for any STD/STI you are also at risk for HIV.
According to the CDC, about 25% of new HIV infections are transmitted through heterosexual contact. Men who have sex with men account for about 2/3 of all new HIV infections. IV drug users are also at a significant risk.
Why should I be on PrEP?
PrEP puts you in control of your HIV status, regardless of the HIV status or behaviors of your sexual partner(s). When taken properly, PrEP offers you nearly perfect protectionagainst HIV, and it’s significantly more effective than condoms.
How can PrEP increase sexual pleasure and intimacy during sex and in relationships?
With PrEP, you no longer have to think about HIV during sex. It frees you up to relax and enjoy yourself. It can even give you the confidence to explore sexual desires you may have been too worried to pursue without the protection PrEP offers.
Does PrEP protect me from other STIs?
PrEP only protects you against HIV; however, you will be tested for STIs every three months by your PrEP provider. This will put you on an automatic schedule to be tested for STIs and, if necessary, receive prompt treatment to better protect you and your sexual partners.
Does PrEP have any side effects?
Most people do not experience any side effects. A small percentage of people might experience minor digestive issues or mild headaches. Truvada can lead to slight changes in bone density and kidney function but rarely do these changes cause serious medical issues. Descovy is less likely to cause bone density or kidney issues. Truvada and Descovy have both been proven to be extremely safe medications. Your provider will closely monitor any changes PrEP may have on your health.
